What it does for you

The most consistent result across research is better skin hydration. Improvements in elasticity and fine lines show up in some trials but not all, so we set expectations at hydration first.

Why we use it

5 g is the dose most published skin research is built on, so that is what we use. Under-dosing collagen is the most common shortcut in this category and it makes the whole product decorative.

Mechanism

Eating collagen does not become skin collagen. Digestion breaks it into short peptides, some of which reach the bloodstream intact, and the leading explanation is that these act as a signal to the cells that build collagen rather than as raw material.

Commonly confused with

Collagen peptides are not the same as gelatin, which is collagen that has been broken down far less and is not absorbed the same way. Marine, bovine and porcine collagen differ in source rather than in mechanism. Marine is mostly Type I, which is the type dominant in skin.

What the studies say

Eye wrinkle volume reduced approximately 20% versus placebo (p<0.05), sustained 4 weeks after stopping. A suction-blister biopsy subgroup showed procollagen I up 65% and elastin up 18%; fibrillin up 6% was not significant.

Skin elasticity improved significantly in both dose groups versus placebo. Hydration and transepidermal water loss showed favourable trends but did not reach significance overall.

Hydrolyzed collagen significantly improved skin hydration (Z = 4.94, p < 0.001) but showed no significant effect on skin elasticity (p = 0.21). The authors also identified several biases in the included trials. This is the larger and more recent of the two major meta-analyses and it is the more conservative one.

Independent. Directly relevant: hydration is the best-supported outcome; elasticity and wrinkle claims are less secure than the category markets them to be.

Concluded that 90 days of hydrolyzed collagen reduces wrinkles and improves elasticity and hydration.

A formal methodological rebuttal on study heterogeneity was published in the same journal (Peres G et al, doi:10.1111/ijd.15748). Any brand citing this meta-analysis should know the objection exists, and should note that the larger 2023 meta-analysis did not replicate the elasticity finding.

Fish or shellfish allergy. Not studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
